by Pete Stampede and David K. Smith I'm afraid I opened the Guardian newspaper one Tuesday to find an obituary of Declan Mulholland, who is glimpsed struggling with weights near the beginning of "The Fear Merchants." A leading force in London's socially committed Unity Theatre, Belfast-born Mulholland was a friend of Peter O'Toole and had minor roles in some of his films, e.g. The Ruling Class (1972). For the trivia-minded, Mulholland was the original Jabba The Hutt stand-in for Star Wars (somehow appropriate). The scene was to have a stop-motion character superimposed over him, but budget constraints forced George Lucas to cut the scene altogether. The scene was re-inserted into the recent re-release, but you still won't see Mulholland since Jabba was finally superimposed as a computer-animated character. He also appeared in Theater of Blood (1973) along with Diana Rigg and Ian Hendry. And he guested twice on Doctor Who, "The Sea Devils" (1967) and "The Adroids of Tara" (yes, Tara! 1978). Born in 1932, he died June 1999. |
