The Dossier-Tara King Connection
The
Tara King era is awash with rumors, many of them unsavory. Those who have
learned of The Avengers Programme Guide, the original version of The
Avengers Dossier by Cornell, Day and Topping, have often wondered why
it was pulled from the market. The answer is perhaps one of the uglier little facets of The
Avengers' history...
Linda Thorson was supposedly living with John Bryce at the time he was
"recalled" to replace Brian
Clemens and Albert Fennell. This alone throws a funky spin on anything
to do with "casting" Diana Rigg's
replacement, as it is entirely believable that the choice was inevitable.
Which brings us back to The Avengers Programme Guide and why it was
pulped one day after its release: it featured an excerpt from an interview with Clemens after his return to the
helm, to the effect that they were "stuck with the ex-producer's girlfriend" in the
lead. Apparently Ms. Thorson
very understandably threw a fit and demanded the books be destroyed.
This is not the sort of material I care to delve into, but there has
been so much speculation about it that clearing it up might keep the rumor
mill a little quieter.
