THE GRANDEUR THAT WAS ROME

Steed attends a Roman orgy
Cathy is offered as a human sacrifice

Production completed: 19 July 1963
UK Premiere (London, Season 3): 30 November 1963
US Premiere (A&E cable): ca. 18 March 1991

Strange diseases have been breaking out in various parts of Europe and Asia, and when there are signs of the same in Britain, Steed and Cathy are called in to investigate a feedstock supplier. Clues lead them to the headquarters of the World Empire Party, home of a modern-day Cesar who plans to start the next plague in order to conquer the world.

 IMHO

The idea is great—a diabolical mastermind with an eye to rule the world in the manner of ancient Rome—but sadly the execution leaves a bit to be desired. Suffers from a perforated plot, a terrible American actor, and a number of technical flaws, such as someone tripping over the camera and Caesar spilling his wine down his face.

 Trivia

Rumored to have been remade (after a fashion) as "Silent Dust."
