The Bird Who Knew Too Much
By Rodney Marshall

The first time I watched this episode I took an instant dislike to it. However, subsequent viewings have mellowed my opinion. My initial feelings were governed by a natural dislike for Clemens' OTT silly scenes, such as Steed breaking each seed in a search for hidden messages, Ron Moody's ridiculous bird headmaster and the tag in which the car can only drive in reverse.

However, there is plenty of style—to alleviate the stupidity—including the enthusiastic hit men who clearly relish their job. Mrs. Peel has two memorable fight scenes, one on the diving board, the other taking place in an old fashioned cab. The gun trap in the photograph studio is a nice touch although the photographic shoot itself—no pun intended—lacks the charm of the similar scene in "The Murder Market." Steed and Emma enjoy plenty of scenes together which is always a plus point and the conclusion is amusing, as they both declare a preference for birds basted in a red wine sauce. Despite the silliness, then, the hour has a definite style and pace about it, making it an enjoyable (though not a classic) episode.
