Episode 52: Cathy Gale Era |
Production completed: 22 March 1963 What do a boxing ring, a bar of soap, and a couturier have in common? Smuggling ambergris, naturally. But seriously, Steed suspects the owners of a boxing ring are smuggling ambergris (used to make perfume, among other things), so he and Cathy arrange to manage a boxer in order to give them a chance to dig for clues.
A very strange brew, combining the theme of the week—in this case, boxing—with a lesson in the evils of smuggling substances derived from endangered species. While it is reasonably well produced, the clash of topics is just plain odd. There is a lot of attention and screen time devoted to boxing fights, which might be interesting if you're into this sort of thing. Otherwise, there is little to recommend this episode, sorry to say. Sad way to close the season, considering the gem that just preceded this dud.
The three models from the Kenneth Sweet Collection were June Hodgson, Diane Keys and Elaine Little. Some scenes were pre-recorded on 21 March 1963 in advance of the main recording. *This unofficial subtitle is by Yours Truly.
