Episode 2: The New Avengers |

"They died of everything!" A young man is bestowed with every known major disease, and as he is immune to them all, he literally carries the touch of death. The Avengers learn of him with the arrival of an old adversary of Steed's, so fat as to be unrecognized—but fat with gold dust, meant as payment for Midas, who is up for auction. During a break-in, Purdey is caught by Midas' keepers and offered to him for a one-night stand—literally—as they practice to receive a royal visitor.
A reasonable effort, with a hint or two of quirkiness here and there to keep it interesting; David Swift nearly captures the spirit of the original diabolical mastermind. Sadly, his fellow doppelgangers John Carson and Ronald Lacey are almost wasted, as they fail to imbue the show with any of the off-beat charm of the original series—fast cars and mod seventies music tend to dominate instead. Not to mention that they try to pass off two very Western actors as Chinese—a recurring flaw of the series, original and new. But if you like serious car chases, this one's got your number.
Miss Sing bids Steed farewell with, "May you have the blessings of many sons." Steed: "In view of the fact that I'm not married, many sons might prove rather an embarrassment. Of course, if you were prepared to become personally involved in the event..."
