Purdey is given the title role by a
mastermind in order to get Steed to supply secret documents to the enemy—or is it something else? Armed with
proof that Steed murdered a colleague, Gambit is sent in to arrest Steed. Will Gambit be able to stop Steed from
selling the top-secret papers?
It's a wonder that the Ministry functions at all, what with
all of the
traitors that keep cropping up. And if Purdey gets kidnapped to get at Steed one more
time, I'll... I'll... Well, at any rate, this ploy is wearing quite, quite thin. While it
has some worthwhile moments—Steed stealing the secret papers is effectively tense—it is
otherwise fairly lackluster and riddled with implausible situations, such as an
antique
sofa capable of protecting Steed and Purdey from heavy, close-range gunfire, not to
mention some iffy dialog (Steed to Gambit: "This is an unexpected surprise."
Well, is a surprise ever expected?). The repeated use of echoed sound bites of people's
memories is also laborious. And Steed's girlfriend of the week, Suzy, is such an uninteresting character—whatever does
he see in her?
Simon Oates (Spelman) played Steed in the short-lived
stage
play of The Avengers.
Gambit admires Steed's medal. "How'd you get that? Ruthlessness in the field?" Steed: "Dedication to duty." Gambit: "Same thing." |
