Episode 25: The New Avengers |

|
It's "The Living Dead" meets Waterworld. A tip-off that an agent is delivering stolen technology to an enemy base leads the Avengers to Canada, only to find the agent has been shot. His dying words—"Forward Base"—prove more significant than the advanced missile guidance system he's carrying. Another enemy agent arrives to collect it, and then promptly chucks it into Lake Ontario! This is only the first of a series of very strange events and people our trio encounters.
By far the best of the Canadian lot, if only by virtue of its sheer absurdity. The episode's chase scene takes place on the water in gurgling, motorized swan boats at a rip-roaring two miles an hour. Steed gets to bonk a bad guy on the head with his bowler (first time in a very long while). Purdey gets to speak with a Canadian accent. And we're treated to some classic strangeness and an old-fashioned eccentric.
While there are many nice touches, the best of the lot is Steed quizzing Purdey and Gambit about their discovery of a drowned man wearing an evening gown and pajamas.
A bewildered fisherman offers Steed some advice. "Fishin'?" Steed: "Yes." Fisherman: "They're in the trees, ya know."
