A convict with a secret is killed for it practically the moment
he is released from jail. Purdey and Gambit race 'round the countryside searching for
clues to the secret—about which no one has any idea—followed closely by two rather shady
characters. For everyone's combined efforts, all that's retrieved is an old western
paperback, which Steed reads twice, remarking, "Apart from a rather explicit
description of Bessie's mating habits, Bessie is the owner of the Golden Wheel Saloon... a
woman of startling proportions." Whilst Purdey ("I'm not a frog!") and Gambit ("Could be a stuck carburetor!")
engage in multiple cross-country chases, Steed plays cards with a traitor.
Well crafted fun, with a maximum of interesting chases, clever plot twists and cute dialog,
and a minimum of gratuitous violence and 70s wah-wah guitar music. Indeed, this departure from
typical bang-em-up fare has a veritable surfeit of clever action sequences, set pieces and delicious jazzy music
cues. "Park your official posterior" and have a grand old time.
Purdey is hungry and pesters Gambit into taking her to an
Italian restaurant. They wind up instead at a hot dog stand. Purdey to vendor: "Did
he book ahead?" Vendor: "Nope, just lucky."
Purdey and Gambit examine Steed's bloated, lumpy bowler after
it had saved his life from a point-blank shotgun blast. Gambit suggests Steed might need a
phrenologist, and Purdey quips, "He needs a phrenologist like he needs a hole in the
head."
